Passed away peacefully in the early morning of Tuesday, December 10th, 2024, at the age of 79 years old. Hank was born on February 24th, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, to his parents Louis and Josephine (Sabella) Shurba. He grew up on Laramie Avenue on the west side of Chicago – the second youngest of nine siblings. After graduating from Austin High School, Hank was drafted into the Army, where he was stationed in Colorado Springs, CO. Hank married the love of his life, Julie Simonelli, on November 8th, 1969. The two settled in Elmhurst, IL, and started their family. Years following, daughter Gina was born, followed by son Dom. Hank worked as a union sheet metal worker, all while pursuing his passion for music. Hank opened Remember When Records in 1983 and ran a successful small business. For 28 years, Hank sold records, CDs, and memorabilia. However, for his many customers, he was much more than that. He connected with all his customers and developed lifelong friendships. He touched countless people’s lives through music and fellowship. Hank retired in 2011 and spent his remaining years traveling and enjoying life with family.
Hank was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Julie, daughter Gina (Brian) Newton, son Dom (Lisa), and granddaughters Ella Shurba (15) and Chloe Newton (9).
A visitation for Hank will be held at Chapel Hill Gardens West, 17W201 Roosevelt Rd, Oakbrook Terrace, IL 60181, on Thursday, December 19th, from 4 to 8 pm. A funeral mass will occur at Visitation Catholic Church, 779 S York St., Elmhurst, IL, on Friday, December 20th at 10:00 am.
