George Andrew Kanelos, beloved son of the late Andrew George and Esther Cummings Kanelos was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 12, 1929 and died in Austin, Texas on April 25, 2010. He attended Morgan Park Military Academy, Northwestern University and Coe College. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. George A. Kanelos was president of Andes Candies, Inc. from 1960 until its sale in 1980. With the help of a dedicated workforce, he changed the business from making assorted chocolates by hand at its Chicago-based candy kitchen and sold in 100 Chicagoland Andes Candies shops to a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant he built in Delavan, Wisconsin to make molded Andes Crème de Menthe ® chocolates and distributed nationwide.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Alice Byers Kanelos and their four children, Jorjanne Murry, Elaine Kanelos, Alexa Skrudland and Andrew Kanelos and his daughter-in-law Kimberly Morgan Kanelos. George is also survived by his nine grandchildren Ryan Murry, Austin Murry, Haley Pearson, Tess Whalen, Vanessa Sumner, Ross Skrudland, Diedre Skrudland, Christian Skrudland, Noah Skrudland and three great grandchildren, Sophia Sumner, Ella Rose Sumner and Haylen Skrudland. George is survived by his sisters, Mary Jane Hanson, brother-in-law Owen Hanson, Alexandra Linn and brother-in-law Robert Linn. He leaves behind his uncle George Athan and Aunt Mary Kanelos.
George is predeceased by his beloved grandson, Nicholas Christian Skrudland, and his dear sister, Sophia Relias.
Visitation Thursday 1:00pm until time of funeral service 2:00pm at Mt. Emblem Cemetery, 510 W. Grand Ave., Elmhurst, Illinois, interment to follow, at Mt. Emblem.
