Thomas G Griffin

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Thomas Griffin Jr., aged 84, who left us on August 25, 2024. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 21, 1939 to the late Thomas G Griffin Sr. and late Bernice C Griffin (nee Kolb). A lifelong Chicago resident, Thomas was a revered figure in his community, known for his deep commitment to his family, friends, his faith, and his country.

Family was paramount to him, and he is a loving son of the late Thomas G. Griffin Sr. and Bernice C. Griffin (nee kolb). Dear brother of Stephen (Rita) Griffin, the late Bernadine (Norman) Reno, and Charlene (Bernard) Klimas. Devoted uncle of Debbie (Al) Crabb, Pam (Joe) Olszowka, Norm (Nancy) Reno, Barney (Sue) Klimas, Kim (John) Austin, Todd (Sandy) Reno, Kelly (Wes) Blankenship, Cherie (Steve) Phillips, Stephanie (Tom) Kresten, fond great uncle of many grandnieces and nephews, and great grandnieces and nephews. He was a loving and supportive godfather to many.

Described as the ultimate sports fan, caring, giving, and always thinking of others, Thomas was the definition of a gentleman. He was faithful, loyal, honorable, and possessed a witty sense of humor.

Thomas attended St. John the Baptist for primary school and graduated from De La Salle High School, class of 1957. His passion for education led him to a fulfilling career, initially with Gregory Elevators and subsequently at the University of Illinois, where he worked until his retirement in 2004.

He was an honorary retired member of the IUEC Elevator Union Local #2. A proud Army veteran, Thomas served from July 1963 to 1965 at Ft. Carson, Colorado and remained on Reserve Duty until July 1969. His dedication to service was a cornerstone of his character. Thomas is a devout Catholic, actively involved in St. Gerald's in Oak Lawn and St. Christopher's in Midlothian. He is an honorary life member of Father Perez Council Knights of Columbus #1444. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life, evident in his actions and commitment to his community.

A true sports enthusiast, Tom was particularly passionate about Chicago teams, as a loyal Chicago White Sox, Bears, Blackhawks and Bulls fan (really anybody but the cubs). He avidly followed St. Xavier’s basketball. He celebrated his Irish heritage through his collection of Irish memorabilia and his support of everything Notre Dame. He cherished the time spent watching his great nieces and nephews participate in sports, recitals, and plays, always offering his support and encouragement. Some of his proudest achievements were in 1962 and 1963- Knights of Columbus State Championship, 1984 City of Chicago 16” softball Championship, and in 1985 National Mens Major 16” Softball Championship (Marshalltown, Iowa).

The funeral services are entrusted to Blake and Lamb Funeral Home in Oaklawn, Illinois, where Thomas's life and legacy will be honored and remembered. His passing marks the loss of a gentleman whose life was defined by loyalty, humor, and an unwavering love for his family and community. He set a precedent for living life to the fullest as his legacy lives on within all of us. We love and miss him forever.

A visitation for Thomas will be held Friday, September 6, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 West 103rd Street, Oak Lawn, IL 60453.

A funeral mass will be held Saturday, September 7th from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St Gerald Catholic Church, 9310 S 55th Ct, Oak Lawn, IL 60453.

The burial will take place on Saturday, September 7th at 11:30am at St Mary Catholic Cemetery, 87th Street &, S Hamlin Ave, Evergreen Park, IL 60805
