I met Maria in 2009 when I visited with my best friend, Crystal. We were on a summer-long road trip, and Maria & JL's home was one of our first havens along the way. I was immediately drawn to Maria's warmth and sense of humor, and we had so much fun seeing Chicago through her eyes and talking books and favorite shows (K-Pop wasn't a presence yet, or I'm sure I would have been a convert). She loved her city and sharing that love with us. Our time spent with her, JL, and Max was some of the best that summer. In the years since, we mostly kept track of each other through Crystal, Facebook, and Christmas cards, but my appreciation for her spirit only grew. She was, without a doubt, one of the kindest, truest, least judgemental people I've ever known. Her compassionate remembrance when my mom passed several years ago was a great comfort at a difficult time. I am glad her suffering has ended, but I know how deeply she will be missed, because I know how deeply she loved her family, her friends, and her faith. My heart goes out to all of you.

Elena has been apart of my life since I was a child. She was known to my family as my sister,  Cora's,  dear friend but to me she was not only that but also my Godmother.  
I have memories from childhood to adult  that include taking me with her on the Metra to Ravinia to see a concert,  being  apart of her wedding day as a flower girl to her being with me at my First Communion and she and Lauren celebrating me at my baby shower. I will always hold onto these memories with love. 
To the Moreno and Villagomez family please accept my deepest sympathy and 
condolences. 

Ever since grammar school, Maria Elena or Nen, has been affectionately known to me as Elaine. I remember Elaine and my mom planned a surprise birthday party for me back in high school. I was totally clueless until I opened the door to my house and heard the shouts of “surprise!”  Elaine had invited the teachers from our school: Mr. Riley and Mr. Isaccson and the girls from our chess team. Over the years, this was one of the many ways Elaine expressed her thoughtfulness and deep appreciation for our friendship.

Maria and I met online over our shared love of reading and music. Meeting her honestly changed my life. She taught me that I didn't have to care what others thought of me or my appearance, I could just love me. I loved her, and while I'm sad to lose her, I'm happy at the thought of her being reunited with Sis and Max. My thoughts go out to JL and all who loved her.
