Katharina “Katie” Helwich passed away peacefully Wednesday September 23, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 11, 1929, to Heinrich and Katharina Walbert in the German village of Liebling, Romania. Katie married Martin Helwich on March 3, 1951 in Austria and the couple immigrated to the United States the next year, settling in Chicago.
A friendly person who greeted everyone with a warm hug and kind word, Katie loved to cook and bake, and was always ready and willing to help when family and friends gathered. She was a longtime member of the Lieblinger Pleasure Club, and took great joy in introducing her cultural heritage to her children and grandchildren through the club and its events.
In addition to her husband, Katie is survived by three children: Walter (Georgene) Helwich, Hildegard (Ralph) Elget, and Martin (Suzanne) Helwich; seven grandchildren: Colleen (Matt) Anderson, Adam (Angie) Helwich, Eric and Patrick Elget, and Margaret, Tommy and David Helwich; and two great grandchildren, George and Lavinia Helwich. She was an aunt to many and a friend to all.
Katie was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Heinrich Walbert, who died during World War II.
Services: will be held Saturday September 26, 2015 at Chapel Hill Gardens South Funeral Home 11333 S. Central Ave. Oak Lawn, Il. 60453 Family will be greeting guest for a visitation from 10am until time of chapel funeral service at 1:30pm. Interment will be private.
