Dorothy Lorraine Sutton was born on August 12, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois. “Dot” as she was lovingly called by many family members, was the eldest of two children born to Vivian Ware and Nettie B. Ware. She attended James McCosh Elementary School on 65th and Champlain and Lucy Flower Technical High School for Girls.
Dorothy married and from that union had three sons, Keith, Kenneth, and Karl Thompson. She later married Daniel Sutton on August 19, 1966. Daniel had two children Lynda Fay and Anthony Sutton. Together they created a beautiful, blended family.
Dorothy worked for many years at Wieboldt’s Department Store on State Street. She was employed as a machine operator for Time Incorporated where she remained until her retirement.
Dorothy was a woman of God and as a young girl, she attended a Baptist church with her mother, where she and her sister sang in the choir. Dorothy embraced the Catholic faith in later years and served as an active member of St. Helene’s Church. She was a part of the Communion Ministry. She also prepared the priest vestments for Sunday Masses and spent many years decorating the Church for all the Christian holidays. Her senior years were spent as a member of St. Ailbe Church, which she joined in 2003. She continued her work in the Communion Ministry and participated in the Couples Ministry for several years.
Dorothy was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend. Dorothy loved to dance and had a wonderful sense of humor. She had a joyful laugh and a warm winning smile. She was a great listener and was always willing to offer sound advice when asked.
Dorothy was an amazing baker, and everyone loved her delicious cakes. When her children were young, Dorothy’s house was the place to be. She would serve Kool-Aid and hotdogs to anyone playing in her backyard.
In later years Dorothy and her sister Joan spoke daily. They were so bonded and rarely called each other by name. Joan would say, “How are you doing Big Sister?” And Dorothy would respond, “And how are you, Little Sister?” After their affectionate greetings, they would talk a bit about their day and their favorite tv shows. The love between them was obvious to everyone.
Dorothy was a kindhearted person with a strong will and a giving spirit; she went to her eternal rest on October 22nd. She was 91 years old, and she will be truly missed.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Daniel Sutton, her sons, Keith (Lela)Thompson, Kenneth (Linda Michele) Thompson, Karl (Mary)Thompson, Anthony Sutton, Lynda Fay Sutton, daughter-in-law, Shauna Sutton, sister, Joan L. (James) Shelton, nephews Darryl and Randall Shelton, niece, Diana (Larry) Shelton-Echols, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.
