James J. (Jim, Coach, Papa) Hickey Nov. 5, 1936 - Oct.5, 2014 Born to James I. and Jeanette Hickey, Jim was a 3rd generation San Franciscan and raised his family in Novato. Jim attended Most Holy Redeemer, Riordan High School, San Francisco State and Golden Gate University of San Francisco where he earned his Master's Degree. Jim married the love of his life Dana Driscoll in 1963, and they raised their children Dan, Jim and Karen in Novato. One of Jim's passions was playing in the drum section of the San Francisco Irish Pipers band. Jim was a fourth generation law enforcement officer and retired as a Marin County Deputy Sheriff. Jim (Coach) was most known for the contributions he made to his community by Coaching Football, Baseball and Basketball. Coach Hickey's coaching career spanned over 50 years and he did this with his favorite coaching partner, best friend and brother, Jack Hickey. Coach Hickey influenced many lives on and off the field during his coaching career and took on his favorite roll in life as a Grandfather in 1993 when his first of six grandsons, Sean was born. Now affectionately known as "Papa", he was blessed with Grandsons Ryan, Colin, William, Jake and Jesse to which Papa referred to as his own "six pack". Papa was a fixture at all of the football and baseball fields in Marin whether he was coaching or just supporting the teams and enjoyed being referred to by everyone as Papa. Over the past twenty years Papa worked hard and became an accomplished and award winning artist. Papa is preceded in death by his wife Dana who passed away in 1991. Papa is survived by his daughter Karen (Mike) Hughes, son Dan (Sheryl) Hickey, son Jim (Dee) Hickey, grandchildren Sean, Ryan, Colin, Jake, William and Jesse. Extended family and friends including brother, Jack and Sister in-law Mary-Alice Hickey and all of the Hickey and Driscoll families, Nieces and Nephews as well as his extensive football family. Papa was incredibly loved and will be remembered and missed by all. A Rosary ceremony will be held at Keaton's Chapel in Novato on Tuesday October 14th at 7:00pm. Funeral Mass to be held at Our Lady Of Loretto Church, Novato on Wednesday, October 15th at 10:30 a.m. The Hickey family is very grateful for the wonderful care, friendship and love provided to Papa by all of our friends, family and the incredible people at Hospice By The bay. In lieu of flowers it was Papa's wish to have donations made to the San Marin High All Sports Boosters or Hospice By The Bay. Arrangements entrusted to Keaton's Mortuary Novato Chapel.
