Harley was born August 10, 1936 to Archie and Lucy (Breed) Hall. He and twin brother Harold were the first set of twins in the family, followed nine years later by James and Judith, and preceded by Robert, Donald, and Marian.
In his youth he enjoyed playing at the Alumni Field, the Canasawacta Creek and the farm at the end of Beebe Avenue (where Perry Brown School now stands).
Harley graduated from Norwich High School in 1954, and immediately started working at Norwich Eaton Pharmaceuticals, leaving in 1956 to attend Albany Business College. He graduated from ABC in 1958 with an AAS Degree in Accounting. Shortly after returning to Norwich Eaton, he received a letter from “Uncle Sam” announcing “Your friends and neighbors have selected you” and he was drafted. He served in the U S Army from 1959-1961 and for part of that time served as Company Clerk at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines.
He returned to Norwich Eaton/ P & G and worked in the Cost Accounting department until the time of his retirement in 1996, after 40 years of service.
While working at P & G he met Sandra Benson, and they were married on June 17, 1967. They had three children, Gregory, Richard, and Jacquelyn. Harley was a wonderful father and spent many years traveling with the Norwich High School Band and rarely, if ever, missed a band show.
He was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church and served as Treasurer for many years. He loved taking care of yards at home and church, and would be seen mowing the lawn and keeping the grounds neat at BSUMC, and eventually worked at the church as custodian. He considered the Church his second home and thoroughly enjoyed working with the ladies on Soup and Sandwich days. At that time, he considered his church family his siblings.
For 16 years Harley could be seen walking the streets of Norwich with his beloved dogs, Mandy and Seymour. He treasured the friendships he made at the “Four O’clock Dog Walking Group” at Kurt Beyer Pool.
He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and drove as far as 300 miles one way to babysit. He had a list of “Grandpa Rules”, and will be greatly missed by all six grandchildren.
Harley was predeceased by his parents, Archie and Lucy; his siblings and their spouses: Harold (Sheila) Hall; Marian (William) Barr; Robert (Dorothy) Hall; and James Hall, all of Norwich, and Donald (Dorothy and Barbara) Hall of Sherburne. He is survived by his wife and loving caregiver, Sandra; his children: Gregory (Amy) Hall, and grandchildren Thomas, Haley and Grace, of Dracut MA; Richard (Kimball) Hall, and grandson James, of Westlake Village, CA; and Jacquelyn White, and grandchildren Laci and Ryan Rummler, of Gloversville NY; sister, Judith (Robert) Pike, of Edmond, Oklahoma; sister-in law, Linda (Raymond) Gregory, of Norwich; and brother-in-law, David (Sally) Benson, of Pittsfield NY; as well as many nieces and nephews.
