She was born in Bridgeport, CT on July 8, 1934 to the late Harry and Ann (Sember) Dechamps. After high school she studied nursing and on November 21, 1953, married her loving husband, Charles Wilkinson who survives her.
Doris enjoyed being with family and caring for her husband, sons and later grand and great-grandchildren. She was supportive and active in her sons’ sporting activities from Little League through their careers at Waterford High School, sometimes driving to four fields in a day.
Doris’s friendly manner, her remarkable capacity for remembering names, and her genuine interest in others served her well in her many volunteer activities. She was active in and later served as President of the Waterford Woman’s Club. She also took an active, leadership role in the Norwich T.O.P.S. group. Doris was a communicant at St. John the Evangelist Church in Uncasville where she was very involved in the life of the parish through the choir, calling bingo and helping decorate the church during the holidays. She was a fixture at the Waterford Senior Center where she called bingo and staffed the front desk. In 2010, she was recognized with the center’s Volunteer of the Year Award.
She could always be counted on and was a tireless, committed worker in whatever activity she undertook.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Charles, her sons and their spouses: Michael Wilkinson and his partner Joni Harper of Waterford, CT; Atty. Kevin Wilkinson and his wife Cindy of Wellington, FL; Dr. Keith Wilkinson and his wife Atty. Monica Wilkinson of Grosse Pointe City, MI; and Gregory Wilkinson of Gales Ferry, CT. She leaves 9 loving grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and many she called “friend”. Doris was pre-deceased by her one sister, Carol Dechamps Oliver.
