Uncasville-Barbara Proctor Wheeler, age 98, of Uncasville, passed away at Villa Maria Nursing Home in Plainfield on January 31, 2022. She was born in Yantic, CT on Janurary 7, 1924 to the late John K. and Edna (Bentley) Proctor. She wed the late Raymond Wheeler on March 16, 1945 at Quaker Hill Baptist Church. They were married for 61 years.
Barbara was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her legacy includes daughter Sandra Stapleton and husband William, son Timothy Wheeler and wife Sue, daughter Sally Rogers, daughter Jennifer Brautigam and husband Robert. Grandchildren Sarah, David, Charlotte, Charlsy, Miranda, Sandra, Christina and Ashley. Great grandchildren Evan, Noah, Ellen, Anna and Aydan.
She was predeceased by brothers Buddy, John & Sandy Proctor and sister Ruth Hodgson.
Barbara enjoyed her coffee and crossword in the morning and coffee and a game of Scrabble in the afternoon. She was generous of spirit. No one ever seemed to have enough to eat in her mind’s eye, constantly offering food from her own plate.
She enjoyed a good road trip. The family travelled many a mile cross country with their tent camper, once even encountering a tornado. She and Ray visited Europe on several occasions as well. She was particularly impressed with Ireland’s sheep population, saying she kept wanting to fall asleep.
Barbara was an expert knitter of all things yarn – mittens, gloves, fisherman knits, fair isle and argyle – nothing too difficult for her whirling needles. The piano’s bench in the living room is filled with a repertoire of song books she competently played.
From one of her favorite songs Going Home, ‘It’s not far, just close by, through an open door. Work all done, cares laid by, going to roam no more. Mother’s there expecting me, father’s waiting too. Lots of folks gathered there, all the friends I knew.” Your work’s all done. We will miss you.
Funeral services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Dementia Society of America.
