William Paul Price

On Thursday, November 3, 2022, William Paul Price, loving husband and father of two and neighbor to all, passed away at age ninety-two, surrounded by his family. He was born in the Mt. Zion community in Pickens county, Al, February 15, 1930, to James Edward and Helen Estelle Price. A humble, patient and soft-spoken man, Paul was a friend to everyone he met. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, fix a gadget or small engine, or give the shirt off of his back.

From December, 1952, to March, 1954, Paul served during the Korean War in the United States Air Force. His job, working in a MASH unit, was to fly helicopter missions to rescue downed pilots, one of which earned him a Silver Star. If you were one of the rare lucky ones to hear him recount the experience, you felt the power of the jets as they passed the helicopter, you felt the fear as the dirt flew from heavy gunfire, and you strained to help him hoist the pilot up into the helicopter, barely hanging on as it took off. He was the best storyteller, genuine and sincere.

Paul retired from the VA hospital in Tuscaloosa. He loved traveling with Vivian, whether it was going across the country or just riding around on any given afternoon, revisiting old stomping grounds around Tuscaloosa and Pickens county. Throughout his life, he was faithful to his churches, serving as a Sunday school superintendent and was an ordained deacon. He was always eager to attend the men's Sunday school class at Chapel Hill Baptist. He could always be found participating in charity rides on his Harley.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Opal Ryan (Denson), and brother Cecil Price (Una Jane). He is survived by his wife Vivian McCulley Price, daughters Terri Price and Kimberly Dauser (Al), two grandchildren, Grey and Lydia Dauser, brothers James Price and Lloyd Price. Pallbearers are Al Dauser, Grey Dauser, John Dauser, Travis McCulley, Frank Smelley, and Jeff Smelley. Honorary pallbearers are his Chapel Hill men's Sunday school class and the Tuscaloosa American Legion Honor Guard, of which he was a member. Special thanks to all the friends and neighbors who have gone above and beyond with their time, prayers, food, and efforts. There are no words.
