Dr. Robert Earl Odom, 91, passed away in Winston-Salem, NC, on Sunday November 20, 2022. He was born in Nauvoo, Walker County Alabama to Thomas Raymond Odom and Eula Jane Manasco Odom, who predeceased him, as well as his wife of 55 years Sarah Joyce Smelley Odom and siblings Loyd Odom, Lois Blackwell, Inez Kimbrell, Irene Thrasher and Lowell Odom.
Dr. Odom was a patient, kind and generous father and a devoted husband. He was dearly loved by his children and grandchildren. He is survived by children Laura O. Ellington, Pamela O. Baker (Louis), Robert N. Odom and Anne C. Odom; grandchildren Grayson and Sarah Ellington, Katherine and Christina Baker, Ashlyn and Jacob Fitzgerald; sisters: Marie Mathews, Margaret Tucker, Brothers: Ronnie Odom, Ralph Odom
He received his BS from Florence State College and his MS and PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Alabama. Early in his career he worked at the Army Missile Command at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville and formulated the fuel used in their rockets. He later entered Civil Service for the Army working for US Defense Department. He ended his career of service at the Pentagon in Washington DC often representing the United States in talks with other countries.
Dr. Odom served as 2nd Lieutenant in the Korean war and was a Deacon at Williamsburg Baptist church in Virginia.
Funeral services will be held at Sunset Funeral Home 3802 Watermelon Road, Northport Alabama Saturday, November 26th at 11:00am. The family will receive friends from10:00am until 11:00am at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Serenity Mausoleum in Sunset Memorial Park.
