On June 17, 1929, Martin V. Shelton (M.V.) was born to Beulah and Emmett Shelton in Decatur, AL. He was the ninth of ten children. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Lawrence County, and he grew up there on a farm.
In 1949, Martin met and married Bertha Lee Letson and the lived together until her death in July 2000. In 2001 he married Dione MacDonald and they lived together until her death in 2019.
Martin is survived by four daughters: Delores (Bobby), Reta, Sandy (Mike), and Joette (Martin); two grandchildren: Jennifer (Chris) and Clint (Lisa), and four great-grandchildren: Carter, Jolee, Michael, and Addie; and several nieces and nephews.
Martin is preceded in death by his wives, his son in law Steve Smith, his parents, his siblings, and many nieces and nephews.
In 1953, Martin accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. From that time forward, he devoted his life to the ministry. He pastored churches in North Alabama, Birmingham area and Tuscaloosa area. Along the way, he built churches and parsonages but most of all he built relationships with people. He never met a stranger. He loved people - all people - young and old and from all walks of life.
He was a friendly, fun loving, giving, caring, loving, smiling man and people were drawn to him. His life dedication to God impacted and touched so many people all over the state of Alabama.
Martin never stopped preaching the gospel. Even within a month of his death, he was outlining a sermon and hoping for an opportunity to preach it.
Martin loved his family and always expressed his love in word and deed, He will be greatly missed by his daughters, sons in law, grandchildren, great grandchildren and host of friends.
For many years Martin volunteered at Alabama Teen Challenge helping young men overcome addictions. He was a speaker one day a week, and on weekends he would take groups to different churches to give their testimonies. The family will receive guests from 5:00pm until 6:00pm on February 2, 2022 at Sunset Funeral home with the Celebration of Life service following.
