December 8, 2022.
Lew was born on April 13, 1941 in Eutaw, Alabama to William Clarke Drummond and Eugenia Augusta
(Pritchett) Drummond, the fifth of five children. Lew spent his childhood in Huntsville, AL and attended Huntsville High School. He is preceded in death by his parents and stepmother Libby Drummond, brother, Billy Drummond, sister, Rhonda Henshaw, brother, Richard Douglas Drummond, and sister, Dell Dillard.
Lew was very proud of his degree from the University of Alabama in Marketing Management and was a
dedicated Crimson Tide football fan. Before finishing his degree, he served in both the Army Reserves and the Navy, and worked at NASA in Huntsville on the Saturn rocket program. Growing up in and around cars as the son of a mechanic, he loved cars and maintained all the family vehicles himself for many years. Lew also played drums in a band called The Lantanas during his college career.
After graduating from the University of Alabama, Lew had a 30-year career at IBM, while being extremely
active in local politics and civic service. As the volunteer chair of the Northport Planning and Zoning Commission for many years, he oversaw numerous improvements to Northport infrastructure and development. Lew and his wife Sandy were early members of St Mark United Methodist Church where he served faithfully. However, he was probably most proud of his service to the Tuscaloosa Morning Rotary Club, an organization to which he devoted many hours throughout his adult life, including serving as the chapter President. In 1995, Lew was honored with the Northport Citizen of the Year award. In addition, Lew was also involved with the JC’s, Tuscaloosa Chamber and the St Andrew’s Society.
Following his retirement from IBM and the City of Northport, Lew was the director of the Office of
Workforce Development at Shelton State Community College, served as Chair of the Shelton State Foundation, and was executive director of the Alabama Automotive Manufacturers Association. He took great pride in the strong automotive industry in Alabama and in providing training to members of the community to enable them to start careers in the automotive sector with a focus on Mercedes Benz.
Lew enjoyed attending church, walking laps at Fitness One, working on projects in his shop, cheering on
Alabama football, keeping up with politics, and spending time with his family and pets.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Jones Drummond, of 55 years, son Lewis Clarke Drummond,
Jr., daughter Katherine Anne Drummond (Sebastian Franzinger), and grandchildren Jude Clarke Drummond and Charlotte Louise Drummond Franzinger.
The memorial service will be held on Thursday December 15th at St Mark Church, 1421 McFarland Blvd.
N, Northport, AL 35476. Visitation starts at 10am followed by celebration of life at 11am in the sanctuary.
