Doris was preceded in death by her beloved son Jim, her parents and her brother James Lewis Roberts.
She is survived by her husband of almost 67 years, James Lynne McHugh, her daughter Jane McHugh Stull (Charles) and her granddaughter Sarah O. Pickett (Jeremiah). She was born February 15, 1934 in Gordo, Alabama to James and Gladys Roberts.
Doris attended the University of Alabama, graduating with a B.S. in Education and later received a MS degree from Alabama A&M. She met her husband James while attending the University of Alabama. They married on January 30, 1955 and later settled to Huntsville Alabama. Doris worked in the Huntsville City School System for over thirty years. She began as a teacher and eventually became the Elementary P.E. Supervisor for the School System and then the K-12 Supervisor. She retired as the Manager of Special Events for Huntsville City Schools.
Doris’ passions were the University of Alabama, the Huntsville community, and children with special needs. She helped to establish the Madison County Special Olympics and served on the board of The Arc of Madison County. Doris also served the Huntsville and Madison County community on the boards of United Way, Land Trust of North Alabama, Heart Association, Big Spring Jam, Harris Home for Children, American Red Cross and HOPE Place. Doris always strived to make Huntsville a better place. She was selected to carry the Olympic torch when it traveled thorough Huntsville in 1996 and was inducted into the Madison County Sports Hall of fame in 2019.
Doris’ love of the University of Alabama was unparalleled. She was the driving force behind the Madison County UA chapter for many years, serving in many capacities, lastly as President of the local chapter. She also served as a Vice President on the UA Alumni Executive Committee and was awarded The Distinguished Alumna Award in 1987. When the University celebrated 100 years of women being admitted to the Capstone, Doris was one of 31 women chosen as difference makers.

Celebration of Life funeral services will be held Monday, January 24, 2022 at 1:00 PM from the chapel of Sunset Brown-Service Funeral Home, 3802 Watermelon Road, Northport, Al 35473. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Mrs. McHugh’s family will receive friends at Sunset Funeral Home on Monday from 12:00 – 1:00 PM.
