Barbara Jane Ponds, age 85, of Northport, Alabama, went to be with the Lord on September 23, 2023. Please join us in celebrating her life Wednesday at 11:00 at Sunset Funeral Home with Rev. Alan Roggli officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 10:00.
Barbara was born September 8, 1938 to loving parents Veron D. and Lillie Corine Rice who preceded her death. Also preceding her in death are her son, Dennis Gordon Evans; grandson Justin Ross Evans; granddaughter Heather Nicole Evans; twin sister, Shelby Dean Evans (Neal); brothers James Owen Rice (Doris), Hollis Warren Rice (Linda), and Robert Milton Rice; niece Linda Evans; nephews Rodney Evans and Danny Rice; and sister-in-law Kathy Rice.
Barbara leaves behind her loving and caring husband of 22 years, Michael Patrick Ponds. She is also survived by her daughters, Blenda Evans Given (Donald) and Dana Evans Given (Jeffrey); son, Tony Randall Evans; brother, Bobby Gerald Rice; grandchildren, Adam Evans, Nicole Griffin (Lee), Ryan Evans, Hannah West (Jacob), Brooke German (Alex), and Jordan Horton (Collin); great grandchildren Alexander, Guy and Masey German, Lily Horton, Alexys and Dennis Griffin, Brody, Brandon, Bayleigh, Whitney, Savannah and Rylee Evans, Micah and Abigail West; daughter-in-law Belinda Bradshaw Evans sister-in-law Marie Rice; stepsons, Brian, Bradley (Ashley), and Brandon (Erin) Ponds; step granddaughters Brailey, Brynna, and Bradleigh Ann Ponds; nephews and nieces including Michael Evans, Becky Channel, Ginger Greene, James Rice, Debra Rogers, and Renee Ledbetter; as well as many beloved great-great grandchildren, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Barbara’s family will remember her as hard working and determined, an inspiration to everyone she knew and never meeting a stranger. She was a professional seamstress for many years and also loved sewing for family, homemaking, gardening and music. She was helpful and heavily involved with her large family and devoted to her church. She encouraged her children to use their God-given talent to glorify the Lord and to live their lives serving Him. One of her greatest joys was in her children and grandchildren singing and playing their instruments.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Given, Alex German, Collin Horton, Lee Griffin, Dennis Griffin, and Colt Evans.
Honorary pallbearers are Justin Evans, Hobert Evans, Neal Evans, Rodney Evans, Dr. Stephen Brown and Alabama Hospice Care of Tuscaloosa.
