Professor Seong Soo Lee was born in South Korea. He graduated from Seoul National University after serving in the South Korean army during the Korean War. He earned his MA and then his PhD at the University of California at Berkeley in 1967 and, thereafter, joined the faculty as a professor in Educational Pyschology and Special Education at UBC. His research investigated a range of aspects of learning, including how students of various ages acquire cognitive skills of reasoning and logic; he was also an early researcher of computer-aided learning. His articles appeared in academic journals, including the Journal of Educational Psychology, the Journal of Experimental Psychology, Contemporary Educational Psychology, and the Journal of Research on Computing in Education. During his career, he helped the department move into the world of computers for teaching and research. He also developed the department’s PhD program, and enjoyed teaching, training, and supporting graduate students.
Professor Lee was also an active and dedicated leader in the Korean community in Vancouver, advocating for and supporting the development of Korean language schools and education. He was instrumental in the effort to establish the Centre for Korean Research in UBC’s Institute of Asian Research. His work with the BC Society for the Advancement of Korean Studies subsequently resulted in the BC government’s recognition of Korean as a language that could satisfy second-language requirements for admission to universities in BC, as well as the early development of teaching materials for language instruction in Korean.
He was married to Dr. Yeong Hwi Kim Lee since 1965 until her passing in April 2018, and is survived by his two brothers, sister, daughter, two sons, and four grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all.
