Ramo is survived by his wife Carole, daughters Yasemin and Rana, his mother Tayyibe, and brothers Ahmet and Orhan. He is predeceased by his father, Kemal.
Ramo had been a Professor of Economics at Simon Fraser University (SFU) for the past 15 years and had also enjoyed teaching and giving seminars across the globe. Ramo was not only a devoted husband and father, he was also an academic and introvert who renewed his energy in the forest trails of North Vancouver and the lower mainland of B.C., as well as in the practice of salsa, Kizomba & Bachata dancing. It was with infinite curiosity that he continuously explored cultures across the globe. In recent years, he also discovered the joy of felines in the family.
Countless extended family, friends, colleagues, and students have been immensely supportive. Special thanks to Diego Alonso Agudelo Rueda and his wife Juliana of EAFIT University in Medellin for their unstoppable efforts, along with volunteers, in the attempt to locate Ramo while missing. The family is grateful for SFU, Police, Consulates, and countless others who assisted.
Especially important to Ramo and his family is the plight of immigrants and refugees. He was a man of no borders.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations to the Istanbul-based charity, Hayata Destek (Support to Life), in support of the more than 3 million Syrian refugees given safe haven in several cities in Turkey. Click the link below for a donation option.
A Celebration of Life for Ramo will be held at Boal Chapel on Friday, January 18, 2019 at 2:00 PM.
A final message from Ramo's favourite poet, Pablo Neruda:
Love is not about property, diamonds and gifts. It is about sharing your very self with the world around you.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.MeM.com for the Gencay family.
