On the evening of July 15th, our dear Mom (and Nana) passed away peacefully at Royal Columbian Hospital, after surgery for an infection of the colon, and then sadly contracting Covid 19 in hospital. She was an only child, adored by her parents James and Blodwen Wilcock. Freda married Mike (Edward Clayton Maurice Hart), and together they raised three children, Carol-Ann (Wade Winkler), Myles and Wayne. Her grandsons Mychael and Russyl Winkler-Hart were fortunate to always spend lots of time with their beloved Nana.
Mom was devoted to her family and cared selflessly for all of us in her thoughtful and loving way. She was a wonderful, supportive, inspiring Mom and Nana. Freda was also a caring and dedicated friend to many. She always cherished her dear nursing friends and classmates, her friends from the Northeast Coquitlam Rate Payers and her community of Port Coquitlam, and other dear friends and family around the world.
Like her Mom, Freda became a Nurse. She attended the UBC School of Nursing and completed her training at Vancouver General Hospital in 1956. She worked as a Nurse at VGH until she devoted herself to raising her children.
Freda had an adventurous spirit and loved to get out and enjoy life and travel. As a young woman, she ventured throughout North America and visited the Caribbean. Her love of travel and adventure continued throughout her life, and our family enjoyed many fishing and camping trips in the RV, and wonderful holidays and cruises. Freda and Carol-Ann had lots of adventures together including trips to Wales and Ireland, China, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, Halifax, New Orleans, Dallas, Kauai, and Yellowknife. Freda would also often "come along for the ride" with Carol-Ann on her work trips, so they could enjoy time together exploring new places.
For anyone who has visited our family home, with the great vegetable and flower gardens surrounded by the forest, you will know what a special place it is. It was Mike and Freda's wish to stay in their home and acreage forever. In the Fall of 2020, during the pandemic, Wayne moved in to care for Mom and Dad. Mom had a terrible fall at home, spent three months in hospital, and came home in a wheelchair. She accepted this and never complained. In January 2021, her beloved husband and our Dad (Poppa) passed away. They were married for 57 years. After recovering from her fall, Mom was thrilled when we bought a wheelchair van, as she was able to get out again. We were able to enjoy some events, and many family dinners and occasions together. Her papillon Miss Jazzy was always by her side.
Please, there is no need to do anything but hold onto your fond memories of Freda. We would love it if you would share them with us. If you feel you would like to make a donation in memory of Freda, these are some of her favourite charities: The Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation, The Salvation Army, The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, and the CKNW Kids Fund. Mom will be inurned next to Dad and her parents in our beautiful forest 'boulder estate' at the Boal Chapel in North Vancouver. Thank you to everyone who has supported Mom and all of us through this difficult time.
