Maria Walter passed away gently and peacefully on November 27, 2024 with her son and daughter at her side. She was dearly loved and lived a full and active life. She was born in 1930 in the Austrian village of Pfaffenschlag and was one of 9 children. She met her dear husband Erich in Vienna after the war and eventually moved to Medicine Hat Alberta, which is where they married and had their first son, Harold. After a move to Vancouver, 3 more children were born, Dolores, Roy and Andrew. Maria was a wonderful, caring mother. She and our Dad raised us to love the outdoors, camping, skiing, hiking and fishing. Together they enjoyed trips to Europe and Hawaii. She was proud of her flower and vegetable garden and loved to swim in lakes, the ocean and the local pool. Her Christmas baking was legendary, and her knitting projects were works of art. She worked at a local community center in later years and was always a faithful Catholic churchgoer. Her faith helped her deal with the losses of Harold and Roy as well as her dear Erich. Dolores married Glen Parker and Andrew married Sally Lee and eventually Maria became a beloved Oma to her 4 grandchildren, Marie-Clare, Erich, Zoe and Hailey. She babysat them when they were young and loved and supported them all her life. Her final years were spent at the Broadway Pentecostal Lodge care home, where she was very well looked after. During that time Erich and his wife Meghan had her 3 great grandchildren, Poppy, Rosie and Arthur. We were lucky to have had many visits with her there, sometimes with the little ones, and taking her out on the walking paths near Granville island. She loved to get an ice cream cone on warm days!
It’s comforting to think of her reuniting with her dear departed husband, sons, siblings and parents. We’ll miss her so much.
A memorial service will be held at the Boal Chapel, 1505 Lillooet Rd in North Vancouver, on December 10 at 10:00 am.
If you would like to make a donation in her memory, the Broadway Pentecostal Lodge or Covenant House would welcome your support.
