Harvey Russell Hathaway Jr. departed this life on April 13, 2023. Born in Rocky River, Ohio on September 10, 1937, Harve was the oldest of 4 children born to Russell and Lila Hathaway. It was later on at Rocky River High that Harve had the good fortune to be asked to the Sadie Hawkins dance by a fellow Junior, Frances Hill, and the rest was history. Married for 62 years, Fran was the love of Harve's life.
Harve's father and Uncle Clayton were both family physicians. It was their deep values in medicine which Harve revered and inspired him to follow the same career path. A proud graduate of Wittenberg University, and later Northwestern Medical School, Harve completed his residency and training in the windy city of Chicago. In 1967, Harve and Fran then happily moved to the sunny climate of Patrick Air Force Base in Satellite Beach, Florida where Harve would serve as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. It was an exciting time, as they were able to have a front row seat to many of the Apollo launches. And as Apollo 11 streaked to the heavens in July of 1969, Harve and Fran moved their family of 5 to Palm Beach County, where Harve practiced Obstetrics & Gynecology for 53 years. Harve was a superb surgeon, delivered thousands of babies, and cared deeply for all his patients.
After his family, Harve's great love was the outdoors. If he was not at the hospital, he could either be found fishing or in his beautiful gardens. He was happiest when on a boat or tending to the orchids he was famous for growing. The beauty of nature warmed his heart, and one of his proudest accomplishments was the endowment of the Hathaway Preserve at Ross Run in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Dedicated in memory of his father, Harve ensured that over 70 acres of land would remain untouched and forever enjoyed by many.
Most of all, Harve was kind, generous and loving. As a nurse said of him once, he was "one of the good guys".
In addition to his beloved wife, Fran, Harve is survived by his three children: Wendy Hathaway Eissey, Julia Hathaway, and Eric Hathaway (Erin). "Chief" will also be greatly missed by his cherished grandchildren, Matthew and Lauren Eissey. Harve is also remembered by his brother, Melvin Hathaway (Sandy) and his sister, Shirley Kransteuber (Bil). Preceding him in death were his brother David Hathaway (Suzanne) and his son-in-law, Mark Eissey.
A visitation and service will be held at Howard Quattlebaum Funeral Home in North Palm Beach on Monday, May 8th from 5-7 p.m. A private family service will also be held at the Hathaway Preserve in Indiana in June. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests a donation be made to Acres Land Trust (acreslandtrust.org). Please designate the "Hathaway Preserve" when doing so. Now go outside. Harve would tell you not to make such a fuss over him and to go enjoy this beautiful day.
