Age 86, resident of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, formerly of Tallahassee, Florid left this Earth on Monday, December 27, 2021 after a battle with heart problems and diabetes. She had a long and happy life. Doris was born on February 21, 1935 to the late Orville Frank King and Anna King in Dallas, Texas. She grew up in Dallas where she graduated from Pleasant Grove High School and received her RN (Registered Nursing Degree) from Parkland School of Nursing in 1956.
After graduating, she served in the US Navy in St. Albans, NY and later in San Diego, California. She met Robert Smith, a Naval Officer, while both were stationed in San Diego. While in Steubenville, Ohio, Doris started a program at Jeff Tech to train students as Licensed Vocational Nurses. After retiring they moved to Tallahassee, Florida. She married Robert Smith in 1959. They enjoyed life in California, South Carolina, Louisiana, France, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida. They traveled the world together and were married until his death in 2002.
Doris spent her years as a devoted wife and mother. She entertained in her home for their many work personal and friends. Doris was a member of several clubs in Tallahassee: Killearn Newcomers, Chat & Stitch, Bunco and a Southern Living cooking group.
She is survived by her siblings: Doris Day of Irving, Texas, Joe Anna Dickerson of Desoto, Texas and Mark King of Franklin, Tennessee. Also, her children, Robert Smith of Greenville, South Carolina and Jeffrey Smith of Tallahassee, Florida, and two step sons, Kim and Kevin Lol. She spoiled all of her grand and great grandchildren from her children, stepchildren and children from second marriages.
