The world is at a loss with the departure of a truly devoted soul, Dave Huisman. A native of Patterson, New Jersey, Dave was born on October 5th, 1944, and his 79 years of life were marked by numerous achievements and unwavering dedication to his loved ones and community.
His early life included proud moments, such as his graduation from Manasquan High School, followed by the attainment of a B.A. from Monmouth University.
In an enduring love story, he exchanged vows with his childhood sweetheart, Susan M. Massey on April 29th, 1967, with their marriage flourishing across a remarkable, devoted 56 years. As perfect soulmates, they crafted a life together that inspired widespread admiration.
Dave’s professional life was both diverse and impactful. He honorably served in the Coast Guard for six years, applying his skills and discipline in service to his country. His academic background in chemistry led him to a role as a chemist at Engelhard in Newark, NJ. He also made significant contributions in the Math Analysis Division at Fort Monmouth in Eatontown, NJ.
Dave was also the entrepreneurial spirit and guiding hand behind The Barclay in Belmar, N.J. His role as Owner/Operator for nearly half a century is a testament to his commitment and exceptional work ethic. He was a constant presence at the bar’s end, warmly welcoming guests and toasting all with some Hennessy lifted high in salute to his many friends gathered around. Wherever he journeyed, people would fondly recall the unforgettable occasions celebrated at The Barclay, often expressing their gratitude for the role he played in making their events truly special.
He lived his life to the fullest, delighting in a variety of pursuits including golfing, reading, boating, skiing, and rollerblading. Beyond his personal hobbies, he cherished moments with his three grandsons, which brought him immeasurable joy.
Dave was a remarkable family man, and incredible husband, a devoted father, and a doting grandfather, whose tireless efforts for his loved ones knew no bounds. He was the epitome of friendship, amassing friends too numerous to count and demonstrating unwavering loyalty and generosity that knew no limits. With a perpetual smile lighting up his face, Dave was affectionately known as a “gentle giant,” greeting everyone with his warm, inviting grin. He was invariably the soul of every gathering, universally adored, and took immense pride in his grandchildren, whom he cherished and nurtured above all else.
Dave’s loving legacy endures through his devoted wife, Susan M. Huisman, his sister Rita Harsin, his children, Heidi L. Huisman, David Huisman, JR. (Joanna G. Huisman), and John W. Huisman (Ariel Huisman), as well as his cherished grandchildren, Pierre-Joseph (PJ) Khater, Jack D. Huisman, and Nicholas W. Huisman.
Dave was preceded in passing by his father, C. Andrew Huisman, his mother, Rita Huisman, and his brother, Andrew Huisman.
Dave Huisman lived a life replete with purpose, integrity, and love…a beacon of inspiration who will be profoundly missed but eternally remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
