Charles D. Hayes, 89, of Boynton Beach, Florida, formerly of Framingham and Wayland, Massachusetts, passed away on July 21, 2024. Beloved husband of Rhona Rader Hayes for over 40 years and devoted father of David D. Hayes.
Charlie was born on January 31, 1935, in Carbon Hill, Alabama to Myrtle Gaddis Hayes and William Vester (Buster) Hayes. A true country boy, he grew up in a small town with his brother Ethbert Hayes and sisters Joyce Hayes Johnston and Doris Hayes Eubanks. Charlie left for the US Navy at a very young age and spent 10 years in active duty. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Following his discharge, Charlie moved to Massachusetts in 1963 and joined the Wayland, Mass. Fire Dept. where he devoted 20 years servicing the community fighting fires and more. He was instrumental in bringing the Union to the Fire Dept and served as President. He was also the Parks and Recreation Commissioner and the Road Commissioner during this time. Charlie also joined the Air Force Air National Guard Reserves for a number of years.
Charlie was a true outdoorsman - fishing, hunting, birding, and more - from the mountains to the sea – he loved everything nature. He was an avid student of American history and enjoyed deep conversation with everyone he encountered.
He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a treasured uncle to his numerous nieces and nephews, and his dear friends who Charlie considered his family. Charlie was a self-taught honorable man who treated all he encountered in his life with true respect and humility.
Charlie will be laid to rest in the family plot in Adamsville, Alabama, on Friday, July 26.
