Dr. Catherine Ann (Fish) Harrington, a devoted Christian, loving mentor, healthcare leader, and military leader, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024, at the age of 69. Her life was defined by a deep love for Jesus Christ, her commitment to serving others, and her unwavering dedication to both her country and the field of public health.
Born on October 7, 1955, in Detroit, Michigan, Cathy was the daughter of James and Ruby Fish. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from the University of Michigan and went on to receive a Ph.D. in Public Health, furthering her passion for improving healthcare on a larger scale. Cathy served with distinction in the U.S. Navy active duty for six years and then reserve duty, ultimately retiring as a Commander. Her military career was marked by outstanding leadership and a deep commitment to the well-being of her fellow service members.
Following her retirement from the Navy, Cathy found her calling in education. She became a beloved professor at Palm Beach Atlantic University, where she taught pharmacy students for several years. Later she also taught at Nova Southeastern University. Known for her compassion, integrity, and wisdom, she mentored countless students, guiding them not only in their studies but also in their personal and professional lives. Many of her former students fondly recall her as a source of inspiration, always offering encouragement and helping them navigate the challenges of their careers. Cathy won numerous awards through the Navy and in her Pharmacy career to include many publications too numerous to list.
Cathy had many interests such as painting, camping and traveling. One of her goals was to visit every U.S. state and she achieved that goal in 2019 with her visit to Alaska! Another goal was to travel across the U.S. in a van that she spent almost a year building-out so she could live in it. She finished the van and started her expedition only to get to Arizona where her illness caught up with her and sent her home. Cathy had a determination in life that was extraordinary. And she met and fought challenges head on! She even fought cancer for over a year and still hit some goals during that time.
Cathy’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She loved Jesus with all her heart and sought to live out His teachings by loving and serving others. Her kindness, generosity, and authenticity touched the lives of all who knew her. Whether through her work in the Navy, her teaching, or her volunteer efforts, Cathy’s life was a reflection of her deep love for people and her desire to make a positive difference in the world.
Though Cathy did not have children of her own, she treated her students, friends, and extended family as her own, and her love and mentorship left an indelible mark on their lives. Her infectious smile, nurturing spirit, and steadfast faith will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Cathy is survived by four siblings- Nancy Campbell (Bill) of Indiana, Michael Fish (Cathy) of Minnesota, Rosemary Greene (Theo) of Hermitage, TN and Patricia Bilyeu (Mike) of Sparta, TN, special friend Michael Harrington, thirteen nephews and nieces and a host of friends, former students, and colleagues who will forever remember her for the warmth, wisdom, and love she so freely shared. She is predeceased by two brothers, Richard Fish and James Fish.
A memorial service to celebrate Cathy’s life and legacy will be held on January 4, 2025, at 11 am at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Also, on January 18th, 2025, at 1pm, a family graveside service will be held in Sparta, Tennessee at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with family gathering afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Hearts of Palm, Mama Ada, or Debbie's Dream Foundation, three causes that were dear to Cathy’s heart.
Dr. Catherine Ann (Fish) Harrington’s life was one of extraordinary service, faith, and love for others. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her, and her memory will forever remain a testament to the power of a life lived with purpose and compassion.
