Mary Avril Moore, 92, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2018. She was born in Miami, Florida on April 5, 1926, the daughter of Paul and Marguerite (Gerhart) Moore. She attended St. Cecilia Normal School in Nashville and went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Barry College in 1973 and a Masters degree in Education, specializing in Reading, from Barry University in 1983. Mary was a devout Catholic and lived her faith. She taught hundreds of students in her 55 years of service in the Archdiocese of Miami; teaching mainly at Immaculate Conception and Annunciation parish schools. An expert in teaching reading, Mary tutored many students in her long career. She also taught sacramental classes at Annunciation. A recipient of a National Catholic Teacher Award, she received numerous awards and expressions of appreciation for all she did for others.
Always ready for an adventure, Mary enjoyed traveling throughout Florida with her friend, Barbara Zyduk, and socializing with friends, Debi Mesa and Anita Cody among others. Trips to Maine to visit her relatives were some of her favorite memories. Mary was a talented quilter and crocheter and greatly enjoyed her wide variety of collectibles. Her mischievous sense of humor and unique driving habits will be greatly missed.
Mary is predeceased by her brothers, Paul and Gerhart. She is survived by her niece, Kathleen Moore and husband Robert Nardi; Christopher Moore and wife Jane; nephew Alan Moore and niece Janine Moore; sister-in-law Lorraine Moore; great niece Erica (Nardi) Humphrey and husband Jon; and great nephews Paul and Jack Moore. She was blessed to have several guardian angels in her life. The family wishes to especially recognize Russell Lundgren, a great friend for 20 years who fixed all things broken, and Eutella “Peggy” Nembhard, who was her friend for 8 years before becoming her compassionate caregiver for two years. The family also wishes to extend their appreciation to Father Quilligan and the staff, faculty, and parishioners at Annunciation parish to whom much was given by her and who, in turn, gave much to her.
Much appreciation also goes to Seasons Hospice staff for their care in her final years.
A Catholic mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on November 10 at Annunciation Church on 3781 SW 39th St., West Park. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee near her beloved mother. In lieu of flowers, friends may donate to Annunciation school at 954-989-0606.
