Gene was born in Charleston, SC, on November 4, 1940, to Arthur and Iris Caddell. He was a proud graduate of North Charleston High School, where he met and later married his high school sweetheart, Jeannette. Gene served his country and community with distinction, spending several years in the U.S. Army National Guard and later retiring as a railroad engineer from the Charleston Weapons Station after a long career in civil service. Following retirement, he continued to serve his community as a dedicated funeral assistant and transportation specialist for Carolina Memorial Funeral Home. He also partook in the camaraderie amongst fellow veterans, as a member of the American Legion. Gene’s talents were numerous; he could be found crafting and building a variety of items, including cherished cradles for his grandchildren. His musical talents were a joy and treasure to those around him, as he played several instruments by ear, including the harmonica, piano, and guitar. When not playing music or working with his hands, Gene found peace in fishing and spending time outdoors. His life was characterized by a spirit of service—whether through his work, his hobbies, or his love for his family.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Jeannette Caddell; his daughter, Janet Kellett (Brian) of Bowman, SC; his two sisters: Gloria Maguire (Jim) of Charleston, SC, and Beth Ricketson (Charles) of Walterboro, SC; his three grandchildren: Shannon Cecil (Greg) of Bowman, SC, Christopher Kellett (Carmen) of Johns Island, SC, and Emilee Kellett of Bowman, SC; and five great-grandchildren: Christian and Zackary Cecil of Bowman, SC, as well as Penelope Morgan Kellett, Maverick Langdon Kellett, and Delaney Ware Kellett of Johns Island, SC. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters by marriage, and his many nieces and nephews. His beloved German shepherd, Kelly, will also miss him dearly.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Iris Caddell, and his in-laws, Jerry and Evelyn Seagraves.
