He is survived by his beloved wife Erica Moberg-Carlton of Charleston, South Carolina, and his five children Preston Carlton, Lee Mims, Christopher Mims, Andrew Mims, and Meagan Mims. He is survived by his mother, Mary Ann Mayes Davis and Henry Brooks of Pomaria, South Carolina, and his father Robert H. (Bobby) Carlton, and his wife Laura of Leesville, South Carolina, and bonus sister and brother Kim Slaubaugh and Phillip Rivers, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Cody was born on November 21, 1970, in Columbia, SC, and grew up in Black Mountain, NC, finally settling in Charleston in 2005.
He graduated the University of South Carolina with a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education, earning the President's List. At the time of his passing, he was working on his PHD for Instruction Design at Walden University.
He began his career as a kindergarten teacher and became the State Director for First Steps, and held positions at the State Department of Education. He transitioned into educational software as the director of eLearning Initiatives. He worked the last 16 years for The Branagh Group, developing online learning tools for the field of early childhood. He was also an adjunct Professor at Trident Technical College in the early childhood department. Cody was a dedicated educator and loved what he did.
He loved his church family and felt he had a calling for ministry. Cody’s passion was the Men’s Hike Ministry serving on the hike leadership board. Many Sundays you would find him driving the trolly at Seacoast church, which he called home. Cody’s handprint is on every ministry in the church. Throughout his life, he loved to share the word of God to all who would listen, starting with mission trips to Haiti at age 14 and continuing with a trip in 2019 to Cuba. He was a loyal friend that never met a stranger. He was God’s true disciple.
Cody was dedicated to his children and a true family man. Family was anyone in need. He showed unconditional love for them and lead by example. He never missed a sports game, recital, or award ceremony. He was a doting, loving husband to Erica Moberg-Carlton for almost 18 years.
Cody was truly one of a kind, and he will be missed each and every day by all of the people he has touched and changed along the way.
Cody passed away on February 4, 2021, at Roper St. Francis Hospital, following complications after surgery. He left this earth to be at the right hand of God. Cody, we love you, and you are forever in our hearts… Until we see you again.
