1937-2021
Barbara Jean (Bobbie) Spanos CHARLESTON – Barbara Jean “Bobbie” Spanos, wife of the late Mike Leon Spanos, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2021. Bobbie was born in Horry County, SC, in 1937 to Preston Edison Hodge and Bessie McClam Hodge, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter Fanio Spanos King (Lee), her grandchildren Teri Michelle Hutson Reedy (Chris), Michael Anthony “Tony” Hutson (Perng), and Cameron Barbara King, her great-grandson Greylon Reedy, sisters Val Ford and Rosie Bullard, stepson Michael Spanos, and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her beloved son Bruce Terrell “Terry” Hutson, sisters Pansy McCutcheon and Nell Shifflett, and brother Pressley Hodge.
Bobbie was a loving wife and mother who took great joy in her children and delighted in being “YaiYai” to her grandchildren and great-grandchild. Her numerous nieces and nephews were also captivated by her lively sense of fun and adventure. Bobbie was known by a host of family and friends for her vibrant personality and appreciation of music, laughter, jokes, and perhaps the occasional light-hearted prank. She had perfected the art of both “country” and Greek cooking, the former learned from her wonderful mother and the latter from her talented sisters-in-law, and invitations to her gatherings were coveted. A warm and welcoming hostess who loved to entertain, Bobbie could also spend countless solitary hours happily planting flowers and tending to her garden. She created the most gorgeous and colorful flower pots on the block for all to enjoy. A born caregiver, Bobbie would drop whatever she was doing without a thought to tend to a loved one in need. She faced any obstacles with a “yes” attitude toward life and made the most of every moment.
The family requests that those who wish to make a memorial gift consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
