Margaret Carol “Meg” Schmidt, beloved daughter, sister, aunt and animal mom, passed from this earthly life on September 24, 2024, leaving a hole in the fabric of our family that will take much time to mend.
Meg was born in Norman Municipal Hospital on November 22, 1960, to Margaret (Schachle) and Willard Schmidt. She was a lifelong resident of Norman; a 1979 graduate of Norman High School and 1983 graduate of the University of Oklahoma, earning a B.A. in Journalism. Meg was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and during college worked as a part-time nanny and babysitter, pet sitter and house sitter for what seemed at times like half of Norman. After graduating from OU, Meg enjoyed working as an office manager at EMTEC, an engineering consulting firm, before accepting an administrative position at OU Health Sciences, then at the Department of Human Relations on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman. She retired in 2022 after more than thirty years of service to the University. She made good friends everywhere she worked and is described by her colleagues and co-workers as diligent, funny, reliable and “smart as a whip.” The family would like to thank the OU Human Relations staff and especially Dr. Wesley Long and Dr. Susan Marcus-Mendoza for their many kindnesses to our sister.
Meg was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and taught Religious Education for many years, a ministry she loved. She decorated her home and her life with beautiful artwork and books and furnished much of her home with pieces that had been loved by our parents and grandparents.
Loving and caring for unloved and unwanted animals will always be a big part of Meg’s legacy. While supporting one of her closest friends through her cancer journey, her friend realized how sad Meg would be after she passed and went to the animal shelter to find a companion to help her when she was gone. Her friend asked for the most unwanted dog; the one that had been there the longest and returned the most times. They came back out with a four-pound snarling ball of teeth. Her friend showed up at Meg’s door and told her she had someone who needs you to love them. That little furball jumped four feet into Meg’s arms and remained there for over a decade. Contributions to Second Chance Animal Sanctuary, 4500 24th Ave NW, Norman, Oklahoma 73069 or Norman Animal Welfare, 3428 Jenkins, Norman, 73072, are suggested ways to honor Meg’s memory.
Meg was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, Flora (Walker) and Allie Schachle and Dorothy (Leikam) and Raymond Schmidt. Left to remember her kind and loving spirit are her sister, Layne Evans, and her husband, Deane, Norwalk, Connecticut; brother Paul Schmidt and his wife, Sheryl, Norman; sisters Lisa Schmidt, Norman and Madeline Schmidt, Oklahoma City; brother Kent and his wife, Lisa, Norman; niece Sarah Schmidt and her partner, Tom Goheen, Austin, Texas; nephew Zachary Schmidt, Norman; niece Kathryn Schmidt, Norman; aunts Beth (Schachle) Hufnagel, Okarche; Nancy Schachle, Lexington, North Carolina and Cecilia Schmidt, Hays, Kansas, and many cousins and friends. Her much-loved kitties, Sweet Mary and Patrick “Paddy” Schmidt, are safe in the care of family members.
Services will be scheduled for a future date. Meg will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Elk City, Oklahoma, next to our parents and where our grandparents, great grandparents and other family members are buried.
Meg managed difficult health conditions for a number of years but never lost her razor wit and fierce independence. She was a bright spirit to the end.
