Gene “Mike” Michael Harmon, of Norman, Oklahoma, passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2023, in Norman at the age of 70. Mike was born on August 2, 1953, in Norman, to Louis Albert and Eula Mae (Oliphant) Harmon, and was the last of 5 children.
Mike attended Norman High School and graduated in 1972. His first love began in 1960, when he was introduced to car racing. This was a family love affair that spanned multiple decades. Mike was always the “unofficial” crew chief to several sprint car teams. Racing allowed him and his family to travel the country and provided a lifetime of memories.
Mike met the love of his life, Shelley, in high school in 1971, at Sonic while cruising the strip. They were married on December 20, 1973, and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Mike worked as a welder for General Motors for 40 years, before retiring in 2006. After retirement, he started his own lawn care business with close friend, Jim Ray, and after 5 years, he was forced to stop due to health reasons.
Mike adored his 2 grandkids, Brayden, and Marley. His greatest joy was being their Papa. He lived for any opportunity to support them and brag about their successes. His heart was devoted to always making them happy whenever they came to visit Nanny and Papa’s.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Dee and Lon Harmon.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Shelley, daughter Amy Kingsbury and wife Kendall; son Jason Harmon and wife Erin; grandchildren Brayden and Marley; sister Nelda Black and husband Jimmy; sister Mary Lou Younkins; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family and a host of friends.
A visitation for Mike will be held Friday, January 5, 2024, from 5:00PM-7:00PM at Primrose Funeral Service, 1109 North Porter Ave, Norman, OK 73071. A memorial service will be held 10:00AM, Saturday, January 6, 2024, in Norman at Primrose Funeral Service.
