Freddie Joe Ozment went to his well-earned rest on May 8, 2022, in Norman, Oklahoma - just a few months shy of his 80th birthday. Born in Mesa, AZ on August 3, 1942, Freddie lived most of his life in Oklahoma City and Norman. He leaves behind a devoted wife of over 58 years, Anita, as well as four loving children: David, Duane, Angel, and Mikey Joe. He also leaves 12 grandchildren, one great -grandson, and numerous unofficial "foster" children.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Freddie Joe married Anita Christine Cowden on March 7, 1964, and worked for almost 40 years as an Electrical Engineer for Southwest Electric. But his true calling, and greatest pride, was his work as a family man--and no one did it better. Fred worked a "double shift" as Dad, first unofficially adopting and raising two of his nephews after they'd reached pre-teen age (David and Duane), before then officially adopting his "second set" of children (Angel & Mikey) when each were still toddlers, and the older two boys were grown.
But even beyond his own children, Fred was always ready and willing to open his heart and home to more. He & Anita informally fostered other nephews over the years, and he was always ready to take in more, serving as a "second dad" to other children or friends of his kids. Even if he heard a story about a child struggling, he would suggest to Anita, "Well, maybe we can take them in."
He was very proud that three of their children also adopted, carrying on the legacy of loving children! Later, he became the beloved "Papa" of 12 grandchildren, and he was as loving as he had been as a dad and more. It is hard to imagine what so many lives would be like now if Fred hadn't stepped in with Anita to take in so many kids, to keep them safe, to support and love them, and provide them with everything needed to try and live up to his standard as a caring, giving, loving man who will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege to know him.
The family was very blessed to travel around America quite a lot with their kids. Later, upon retirement, they were able to travel with their RV and enjoyed it immensely, visiting most of the US, including flying to Hawaii to celebrate their 25th anniversary & a cruise to Alaska to celebrate their 50th.
The last few years have been focused on enjoying their children and grandchildren and attending lots of fun ballgames. Since 2006 they also were able to attend OU home football games where they enjoyed many happy times, having been lifelong OU fans.
They attended Lakeview Baptist Church for many years and attended the Wednesday Bible Study class for several years – enjoying wonderful support & fellowship, bonding with many very special people!
The family would like to thank a long-time home health nurse Molly, PT – Wendy, and Dr. Erica Dearman and Dr. Charles Anderson for their kind, wonderful care and encouragement.
