Retired U.S. Navy Master Chief Maxwell L. Haslip, Sr., 78, passed away August 21, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. Max was born in Port Huron, Michigan on January 31, 1932 to the late James Henry and Tressie Mae Haslip. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Katherine; his sons Maxwell Haslip Jr. and his wife Wanda, and Robert Haslip; daughters Deborah Keene and her husband Robert, and Jennifer Shirley and her husband Jeffrey. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Shannon, Meagan, Jordan, Joshua, Ryan, Logan and David. Max was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, James, Robert, and Stanley. He has one surviving sister, Virginia Cormack.
After graduation from high school in 1950, Max enlisted in the Navy where he met and married his wife in 1953. After settling in Virginia Beach in the late 1960's, Max retired from the Navy in 1980 after 30 years of dedicated service. He then went on to start a new career with Stihl Incorporated. He retired from Stihl in 1994 after which he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 24, at Woodlawn Funeral Home 6329 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk at 11 am, with a visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
