Our mother, Nana, sister, and aunt, Ann M. Ellis passed away on Monday, January 29, 2024.
She was a true southern lady who was filled with love, compassion, and kindness. She taught her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews the meaning of life. A life full of love, devotion and honesty.
Ann was born on June 22, 1933 to Bernard and Francis Monroe in Norfolk, Virginia. She graduated from Maury High School where she met and married her high school sweetheart, John Chase Ellis. Together they had two children, Lynn Ellis Sykes, and John Chase Ellis Junior.
Ann worked as a telephone operator for the C&P Telephone Company. She was a stay at home mom until her children began middle school. At that time, she began working for Virginia Beach Public Schools as an attendance secretary at Princess Anne High School, where she retired.
Ann enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, dancing, playing bridge, “thrifting,” and shopping. She never missed a sale at Miller & Rhodes, Smith & Welton, and Rices Nachman.
She was predeceased in death by parents, Bernard and Francis Monroe, husband, John C. Ellis, sister, Mary Bo Taylor, and grandson John Chase Ellis III.
Left to honor Ann's loving memory are Lynn, Wayne, and Rett (grandson) Sykes, John C, Ellis Jr. and Amanda (granddaughter) Matt Zimmerman, Ed Monroe (brother), Whit Monroe (Susan), Debbie (Tom) Grant, Scott (Janice) Monroe, Kathryn (Chuck) Overstreet, Susan Stone, Fred (Dora) Taylor, and Greg Ellis. Great granddaughters Allison Marie Zimmerman and Kynlee Lindsay. She also had several grand nieces and grand nephews.
In later life, Ann found love and companionship with Francis (Bud) Warren. They spent countless hours together laughing, dancing and enjoying each other's company.
