Matthew Benjamin Wolf, 43, passed away at his home in Houston, Texas on Saturday, August 5, 2023. Matt was born on November 16, 1979 at a Navy base hospital in Charleston, South Carolina to Keith and Elaine Wolf. He was preceded in life by his sister Tiffany by two years. The year after Matt’s birth, the family of four moved back to the greater New Orleans area, which became the stomping grounds of Matt’s formative years. It was during this time that Matt acquired his younger brother (by five years), Thomas. Together, the sibling trio navigated typical sibling rivalries, neighborhood friendships and summer pool activities, and eventually college parties, tailgating and fishing trips. Early family vacations were spent at Disney World, but quickly transitioned to beach days in Destin (with the Smiths) and then a few epic National Parks (the only vacation for which he wasn’t present, he was constantly missed – and lovingly blamed for problematic events). In addition to fishing with the family out of Shell Beach , LA, he spent many hours hunting with his brother and close friends. Besides his immediate family, Matt was very close to many of the cousins, several of whom he loved to spend time with, in Waveland, at football games, or any other opportunity that presented itself. Among a few of the cousins Matt was also arguably a leading contender for the status of “Maw Maw’s favorite.”
Matt was a graduate of Rummel High School and an LSU tiger before he began a successful career in banking. Starting as a teller, his people skills and savvy allowed him to move quickly through the ranks of several different banking corporations to emerge as an executive banker who planned and implemented financial growth strategies across multiple lines of business. Matt was recently recognized with an award from his company for his exceptional work, was well-liked at his workplace and developed some great and lasting friendships over his years in banking. It was during his banking career that he also met his former wife, Megan, and they shared a daughter, Avery. Anyone who knew Matt, also knew him as a loving and dedicated dad, who showed up to work swim meets, support shopping sprees, and whatever was needed of him to ensure Avery was happy and fulfilled in life. They most recently vacationed together this summer to explore Matt’s birthplace, Charleston. He was an incredibly proud parent who was himself fulfilled in seeing his daughter grow through her own life experiences. When Matt wasn’t working or spending time with Avery, he could more than likely be found enjoying the tranquility of his hunting lease in the hill country of Texas.
Matt is survived by his daughter, Avery (Houston, Texas), father, Keith, and mother, Elaine (Destrehan, Louisiana), his sister Tiffany and brother-in-law Charlie Varley (Minneapolis, Minnesota), and his brother Thomas and sister-in-law, Adrienne (Luling, Louisiana). He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Marie Ladousier, and Edward and Ada “Maw Maw” Wolf, uncles Edward J. Wolf Jr. and Glenn R. Wolf, and his cousin, avid hunter and fisherman, Kevin E. Wolf.
A visitation and memorial Mass will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Destrehan, Louisiana on September 9, 2023 at 1130 am. In lieu of Flowers, one might consider a donation to the wildlife or fisheries organization of your choice.
