Waterford – Ruth Adelaide (Hansen) Hutchinson, 96, of Waterford, beloved wife of the late Calvin L. Hutchinson, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 28, 2014, at Bayview Health Care Center in Waterford.
Ruth was born January 7, 1918 in New London, to the late Hans Peter Olaf and Regina (Jorgensen) Hansen. She had lived in the East Lyme and Waterford areas for most of her life and was a graduate of The Williams Memorial Institute (WMI), Class of 1936.
She was a homemaker and a devoted member of the Flanders Baptist Community Church. Ruth will be especially remembered for her spontaneous wit and humor as well as always having a well stocked candy drawer for visiting grandchildren. Family gatherings were often filled with rolling laughter as she read her poems she had written about herself, Calvin and family members. She was also known for her devotion to her beloved family of cats throughout her life.
Mrs. Hutchinson is survived by her children, Barbara Kiely of New London, Marion Frink of East Lyme, Linda and husband Richard Merschdorf of Florence, Ariz., Janine Stovall of Anderson, SC and Tammy and husband Arthur Sullivan of Ivoryton; 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, Ruth was predeceased by her son, Walter Sylvia of Stuttgart Germany; as well as her siblings; two brothers, Harry and Carlyle Hansen; and two sisters, Gunvor Bryson and Alice Weber.
Her family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Bayview Health Care Center and Vitas Hospice for the kind and compassionate care they provided to Ruth.
