passed away at home on 5/14/2024/ Richard was the youngest of 3 siblings, Andrew D. Jr and
Jane Raynor who both predeceased him.
Richard is survived by his former wife and life long friend, Arlene, 4 children and 9 grandchildren, Sharon McGrath mother of Liam and Brenna, Kenneth Havens, Robert Havens father of Sophie Taylor-Havens, Olivia Lafayette, Emma Lafayette-Havens, Julie Horner and Husband Trad Horner, with daughters Madison, Samantha and Abigail and son TJ. Julie lovingly cared for her father throughout his illness. Richard had a caring heart and desire to serve and make a difference from a young age. When in high school as president of the student council he worked with the man who would eventually become his father in law to design and implement an enormously successful monthly dance program for teens in his small home town of Eastport N.Y.
When he graduated from Eastport H.S. Richard joined the Navy to become a mechanic for Naval aircraft. After his tour of duty Richard attended Ohio University to earn a degree in speech pathology and audiology and followed that with an internship at Eye and Ear Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was committed to serving his patients well. Richard devoted his life both professionally and personally to caring for others. He worked both in hospitals and maintained a private audiology practice. Richard often cared for long time patients without any charge. He was committed to their care.
Once there was an empty nest, Richard became a passionate member of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church where he again devoted himself to the service of the church and the larger community. His work included, teaching religious education classes, singing in the choir, assisting at Mass and funerals as well as participating in the Knights of Columbus . Richard also volunteered to work with inmates at local prison, visited the sick and homebound. In addition, Richard was a member of the Lions Club and the Ancient Order of the Hibernians. It's clear that throughout his life service and caring for others were paramount. Richard Havens modeled these qualities for all of us.
A mass of christian burial for Richard will be held Friday, May 24, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St Agnes Church, 22 Haigh Ave, Niantic, Connecticut 06357.
