It is with deep sadness that the family of Joan de Burgh-Thomas announces her passing on December 26, 2014. Joan died peacefully of natural causes at the age of 80, with family by her side. Born in Manchester, England on February 27, 1934 to the late Jim and Hilda Hayes, and brother of the late Roy Hayes, Joan grew up in the UK and moved to Canada in 1966 with her husband and the love of her life, Frank de Burgh-Thomas, who also predeceased her. Joan will be greatly missed, by her three children Hazel de Burgh (Martin Tekela), Robert de Burgh-Thomas (Tracey Sader) and Wendy de Burgh-Thomas (Ray Gallen), by her four grandchildren Rachel de Burgh-Thomas (Tyler Bridger), Michael Gallen, Daniel de Burgh-Thomas and Courtney de Burgh-Thomas, by her extended family in the UK and by all who knew her, here in Canada and the UK.
Joan was a feisty character who loved life and a good party. She was an avid tennis player, an amazing seamstress, and she loved to travel. In her career, Joan taught home economics to high school students and adults, and she continued her craft as an entrepreneur in the interior design and custom drapery business. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 2nd at 11am at St. Andrews United Church, 5645 Morrison Street, Niagara Falls, ON, followed by a reception and celebration of her life at the family home in Niagara Falls. Forego the traditional black attire and wear some bright colours to help honour Joan’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated by the family to The Heart & Stroke Foundation or The Kidney Foundation.
