It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Carol Lee Ann Thomas (nee Savriga) on February 15, 2022 at Queenston Place Retirement Residence in Niagara Falls, in her 79th year. Beloved wife of the late Derwyn Thomas (2014). She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her sister Deborah Stovell (nee Savriga), and her nieces Kristie Stovell (Thomas Hunter) and Mollie Stovell. Carol was the proud mother (biological) of Michael Racey (Bridget) and adored her grandsons; Matthew (Kara), Ryan (Emily), and Brandon (Emilee). She was beyond thrilled to recently become Gigi Carol to two beautiful great-grandchildren Adaline and Troy. Loving stepmother to Jeff Thomas and Belinda Thomas and step-grandmother to James. Predeceased by her parents Paul and Victoria Savriga.
Born and raised in Niagara Falls, Carol grew up helping with the family business until she discovered a love of hairstyling. After a few years she moved on to Toronto and pursued a career with The Toronto Dominion Bank in foreign exchange and management. Carol eventually returned to Niagara and met the love of her life, Derwyn.
Carol had many talents. She had a true green thumb and took great pride in her garden. Cooking a great meal and feeding her family, especially her cabbage rolls or even a simple grilled cheese, brought her great joy. Carol loved animals. Over the years she had dogs and cats, fish and birds. In her later years she loved feeding the squirrels and helping in any way, sometimes virtually, with finding lost animals. She enjoyed following the stories online of rescued animals, most notably at Grey’s Haven Farm Sanctuary, supporting her niece’s passion.
Carol touched everyone she knew with her kind heart and generous nature. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to express a great deal of gratitude to all of those employed at Queenston Place Retirement Residence and Home and Community Care Support Services for the exceptional care provided. True compassion was shown by each and every person involved in helping us through this difficult time. As well, a thank you to the nurses at GNGH who not only provided care but also helped us to maintain contact is very much deserved.
As per Carol’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at HETHERINGTON AND DEANS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 5176 Victoria Ave in Niagara Falls on Thursday, March 3, 2022 from 11:00 am - Noon. A graveside service will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Please contact Hetherington and Deans at 905-354-5614 to reserve a spot on the guest list. If desired, memorial donations can be made in her name to her favourite animal rescue, Grey’s Haven Farm Sanctuary.
