Michael Peter Chirichello, known to his loved ones as Michael, passed away on July 22, 2023, at the age of 80, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 19, 1943, in Bronx, New York. Michael is survived by his beloved wife, Carol, and their two daughters, Debbie and Teri. He was also a cherished father-in-law to Doric and Paul. Michael was a proud grandfather to Amanda, Taylor, Contessa, and Aayden.
Michael's parents, Pete and Jean Michalski Chirichello, as well as his lifelong friend, Malcom Taaffe, preceded him in death. They will be remembered fondly by those whose lives they touched.
Growing up in the Bronx, Michael was an active member of his parish within the Catholic Youth Organization. He held various leadership positions and co-founded the Sea Cadets. After spending time in the Dunwooodie Seminary, Michael discovered his true calling in the field of education.
For over five decades, he dedicated his life to teaching, serving as a principal, superintendent, college professor, international consultant, volunteer and author. His impact on countless students, educators, and the educational community as a whole was immeasurable. Michael was a lifelong learner who always sought to inspire and empower others.
It was in New York City’s PS 50 that Michael met his soulmate, Carol. They shared a beautiful journey together and were blessed with two daughters, grandchildren and even gran dogs. After retiring from his career in education, Michael continued to give back to his community. He volunteered with Project Self-Sufficiency’s NJ Youth Corps and the Quinlan’s Hospice program. Additionally, he served as a volunteer on the NJ Child Placement Advisory Committee.
Outside of his professional life, Michael enjoyed cycling and spent his recreation time biking through various European countries. He was an avid traveler and also found joy in gardening.
Michael Peter Chirichello will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of leadership, dedication, passion, and love will continue to inspire future generations. May he rest in peace.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2023 from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton, NJ. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, 48 Tranquility Road, Andover, NJ. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ.
