John Earl Mathews

Born and raised in Franklin, NJ to Marion & William Mathews, John lived in Sussex County for his entire life, residing primarily in Sparta, NJ. He graduated from Newton High School in 1957 and entered the military where he proudly served the United State Air Force. He was stationed in England, France and Morocco. After his honorable discharge John joined the staff at The Style Shop, a men's clothier on Main Street in Newton, where he successfully began his sales career. Men's attire blossomed into automobiles when he was recruited by George H. Condit to join the sales staff at Condit Ford. John's career spanned many decades having held various positions including General Manager for many, many years. John spearheaded the formation of Condit Charities, a non-for-profit organization benefiting the medically fragile, and numerous social service agencies that educate and strengthen families in Sussex County. Bringing renowned musical talent to the local community through Condit Charities was a feat for which John was most proud. Featuring the talents of Willie Nelson, Reba McIntyre, Conway Twitty, and Alabama, just a few of the artists who performed, John used his imagination and his marketing skills to entertain the community as well as to give back to those in need. A perfect combination led by a most generous and dedicated man who was a friend to all. He thought more about others than he did about himself. In addition to his devotion to helping others, he was also a member of The American Legion Post 157 in Frankford Township.

John was preceded in death by his sister Jane Hasenbalg and her husband, William. He is survived by his wife, Gielda (Day) Mathews of Hope, NJ his daughter, Carrie Mathews of Easton PA ; his brother-in-law John Delaney ( Brenda) of Akron, OH; nephews David Hasenbalg (Diana) of Newport Coast, CA; JP Delaney (Judie) of Akron, OH; Kevin Delaney (Robin) of Charleston, SC and nieces Susan Elflein (Charles) of McAfee, NJ; Lisa Hasenbalg of Hawthorne, NJ and many grandnieces and nephews.

Cremation is private and a celebration of life will be held in the future.
