Roy David Kilpatrick, age 84, of Conover, NC, passed away Sunday, February 07, 2016, at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton, NC, after a period of declining health. Born October 31, 1931 in Cherokee County, NC, he was the son of the late James Walter Kilpatrick and Beulah Helton Kilpatrick.
Roy was a member of First United Methodist Church in Conover, NC. He retired from Broyhill Furniture where he had worked for over 40 years. Roy was a master craftsman who enjoyed working with wood and making wooden game boards. He was a former member of the Conover Volunteer Fire Department for over 15 years and was a former volunteer with the Boy Scouts. Roy enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Leatherman, and brothers, Darrell Kilpatrick, Austin Kilpatrick, and Merrell Kilpatrick.
Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Margaret Travis Kilpatrick of Conover, NC; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon K. Abernethy and husband Randy of Maiden, NC, and Teresa K. Coley and husband Scott of Newton, NC; son John C. Kilpatrick of Newton, NC; grandchildren, Georgia Cameron, Andrew Abernathy, David Kilpatrick, Megan Stephens, and Jake Coley; great-grandchildren, Ellen Cameron and River Stephens; sisters, Polly Croghan of Kentucky, and Linda Calloway of Swannanoa, NC; brothers, Harley Kilpatrick of South Dakota, Don Kilpatrick of Maryland, and Jim Kilpatrick of Swannanoa, NC.
A celebration of Roy’s life and service of remembrance will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, February 9, 2016, in the Chapel of Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton, NC. Rev. Gary Royal will officiate. The burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory, NC. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 1:45 to 2:45 PM on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to: St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN, 38105, or to the charity of one’s choice.
