Lillian was the daughter of the late Vance Allen and Bertha Edwards Gilbert. She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters, and her husband of 59 years, Curtis Hobson. She is survived by two children, Steve Hobson and Vivian Peebles; four grandchildren, John Peebles, Craig Hobson, Julie Morgan, and David Hobson; and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers and many nieces and nephews.
Lillian's father passed away just before she graduated from high school, but she was fiercely determined to go to college. She worked her way through Gardner-Webb and the Women's College of NC, where she earned a degree in Home Economics Education. Lillian went to work with the Extension Service, and soon became the youngest home agent in the state of NC, based in Lenoir. While working there she met her future husband, Curtis, whom she married in 1951. They soon moved to New Jersey and lived there for 18 years.
While raising two children Lillian went on to earn a degree in library science and worked in school libraries. The family moved to Athens, TN, in 1970, where Lillian was involved in many activities, like Garden Club and teaching Sunday school. She later set up and managed the county-wide "Contact" emergency phone service. After retirement, Lillian and Curtis moved to Conover, NC, where they lived for over 25 years. They were involved in Woodlawn Baptist Church and enjoyed golf at Rock Barn.
