Born October 21, 1933, he was the son of the late John Henry Shook and Florence Hawn Shook and was a member of Beth Eden Lutheran Church.
John retired from the US Army as Staff Sergeant, after serving 25 years. He was a veteran of both the Korean War and Vietnam War. He served 2 tours in Korea and 4 tours in Vietnam. He was also stationed in Germany for 3 years. John was the most decorated Vietnam veteran in Catawba County having received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Gold Star, and the Presidential Citation, just to name a few.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Auton Shook.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Faye Shook of the home; daughter, Donna Lynne Fletcher and Lee, of Claremont; stepsons, Dwight Hawn and wife, Becky of Newton, Kenneth Hawn and wife, Linda of Maiden; sister, Lillie Mae Miller, of Conover; grandchildren, Nicole L. Fletcher, Jessica D. Fletcher; step grandchildren, Dana Cline and husband, Joe, Lora Drum and husband, Weston, Matthew Hawn and wife, Jessica, Mitchell Hawn, and wife, Jera, Micah Hawn, and wife, Cali; and great grandchildren, Jackson Cline, Lyda Hawn, Keever Hawn, Adrianna Tice, and Katelynn Choate.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Beth Eden Lutheran Church in Newton, with Rev. Marcus Ollis officiating. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Friday, May 15, 2015 at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton.
