Emily Mabel Blanchard was born on May 7, 1936 to Anthony and Emily Kuykendall Blanchard in Lynn, NC. She grew up in a blended family with sisters Estelle (Smith) and Elizabeth (Lowery) from her mother’s first marriage. The siblings from her parent’s marriage were Evelyn Blanchard, Calvin Lewis Blanchard, and Gerald David Blanchard. Estelle’s children Ted and Frances Smith also lived with them.
When Mabel was 16, she went to live with her beloved sister Evelyn, her brother-in-law Samuel Lewis Cordell and their children, Peggy and Robert. She remained in that home for the rest of her life.
Mabel was preceded in death by her grandparents Calvin A and Loutina Justice Kuykendall of Flat Rock NC and Louis and Mary Blanchard of Charlton City Massachusetts.
She is survived by her niece Peggy Mainess (Al), her great niece Meleah Kirby, her great-great nephew Daniel Kirby (Grace) and her nephew Robert Cordell (Debbie). She leaves behind her ladies Bible class from First Baptist Church and her closest friend Jean Kelly of Newton. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.
Mabel worked in manufacturing in Catawba County for 50 years. Her greatest work was done at First Baptist Church in Newton where she was active in teaching preschool classes and in hospitality.
Graveside service will be held at 2 pm Thursday, March 21, 2024 at Southside Cemetery with Pastor Sam Craven officiating.
