Shirley was born in New Hampshire to Melvin and Esther. She went to elementary school in Franklin, NH. In 1952, her family left New Hampshire and moved to Southern California. Almost immediately following her graduation from San Fernando High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Leon Ruther, in June of 1958.
She worked various types of jobs throughout her life, but her most important job was as a wife and mother. Prior to having children, she enjoyed her job working in a florist shop, where she grew her lifelong love of flowers. While her children were young, she volunteered with Granada Hills American Little League as a scorekeeper for her sons’ teams. She enjoyed bowling and participated in many women’s leagues. Once her children were older, she worked as a bookkeeper for various companies. For many years, she was the official scorekeeper for multiple NASCAR race teams she and her husband were a part of. Later in life, for a short time, she was involved as a volunteer helping children learn to read.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Esther, and her husband’s parents, C.A. and Emma.
