It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sara Nell Floyd, beloved teacher, wife, mother, and grandmother, at the age of 90. She passed away at an assisted living facility in Saugus on January 30, 2022. She is survived by her brother Sam, her sons Oberry and Kip, and her grandchildren Bridget, Miles, and Emmi.
Sara was born and raised in Mississippi during the Great Depression. She and her family struggled to make ends meet but their strong faith in the Methodist Church helped them get through. She attended Millsaps College in Jackson, MS to pursue her Bachelor’s in Education where she was also a member of Beta Sigma Omicron sorority. She met her future husband, Grady, at the Methodist Church in Biloxi, MS, where they volunteered as youth counselors and on May 29,1955, they married. Soon afterwards, they moved to Downey, CA, where she earned her Master's degree in Education from California State University, Long Beach. After graduating, they moved to Alabama to raise their sons.
In 1967, the family moved to Saugus, CA, where she taught 3rd and 4th grade in the Saugus Union School District for many years and was an active member in the Santa Clarita United Methodist Church. She retired from teaching but then returned due to a shortage of teachers. After her second retirement, she kept busy with the Church, and volunteered at the Food Pantry, Hart Park, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, and the theater at College of the Canyons.
Regrettably, Sara's husband fought a long battle with cancer and passed away in November 1990. She loved him dearly, and even after he passed away, she refused to even consider dating anyone else. In 2018, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia and relocated to an assisted living facility where she lived out the rest of her days. Her love for her husband, her family, the Church, and the community is everlasting, and we will always remember her for her warmth, kindness, and devotion to God.
Flowers are welcome through Vivian’s Flower Market at (818) 538-0151, and other contributions can be sent to the Santa Clarita United Methodist Church in Sara’s memory.
Her memorial and funeral service will be held at 10am, Monday March 7th, at Eternal Valley, 23287 Sierra Hwy, Newhall, CA 91321. Please RSVP: text Grady at (760) 987-1932 or Kip at (661) 904-4595 as we will be serving lunch at the reception.
