Marva Grace Elizabeth Kerr was born on August 19, 1949, in Maryland Hanover, Jamaica. She was the fourth child of Joanna Mahala Bigby-Kerr and Reginald Edward Kerr. As an adult, Marva studied communications, and worked for 14 years at the Jamaica Telephone and Telegraph Company, where she handled mail, telegraph and teletype systems, and operated telephone switchboards. In 1986, Marva migrated to the United States to live in Granada Hills, CA, with her family. She then resumed her career in communications, working for GTE / Verizon as a 4-1-1 telephone operator, and retired as a fiber optic sales supervisor after 29 years. Ever the busy-body, and feeling “bored” after only a few months, she worked for a period of time at Target, then Wal-Mart, and even volunteered at the Henry Mayo Hospital gift shop.
Throughout her life, Marva was steadfast in her faith in God. She was always the prayer warrior, and emphasized God first in everything. She was selfless and always sought to make others happy through generous acts of service, gifts, and her unforgettable cooking skills. Her Jamaican curried goat, oxtail, stew peas, and famous Christmas cakes, among others, were always in demand. She would mail food and meals to friends and family all over the country. Marva’s greatest joy and source of pride were her sons Nigel, Ardene and Daryl. She also loved her grand-children very much, providing them with whatever they asked.
She enjoyed crocheting, a good puzzle book, loved horses, unicorns and cherubs. Marva loved a good story and a good laugh. You never had to ask for her opinion because you were going to get it, whether you liked it or not. She could be as calm as the ocean breeze, but if you poke the bear, be prepared for the grizzly! That was her fighting spirit. That was Marva.
Marva passed away on Nov 10, 2022 in her home, as she wished, surrounded by her family. She has joined her mother and father, as well as brothers Owen, Donald and Hoover Kerr in heaven. She is survived by her brother Glaister; sisters Maureen and Beverly (Annie); her sons Nigel, Ardene and Daryl; and grandchildren Christian, Christopher, Rileigh and Mahala.
Her faith, strength and love will be forever remembered.
