EN EL CUIDADO DE
Alexander Funeral Home-Newburgh Chapel
Richard (Dick) W. Henry, 92, formerly of Vevay, IN passed away at home with family by his side on Saturday, November 2, 2024. He and his wife, Clara M. (Roberts) Henry resided in Newburgh, IN for 58 years. Dick was born February 22, 1932, In Madison, IN, the son of Richard E. Henry and Mary C. (Protsman) Henry.
He grew up a "river rat" in Vevay and was a graduate of Vevay High School where he played on the basketball team. He enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War. Upon his return he met Clara, and they married. Together they had three children, Andrea, Bruce, and Anita.
The family moved from Vevay to Newburgh in 1966 when the company he was working for, DRAVO Construction, got the contract to build the Newburgh Locks and Dam. Dick was a skilled heavy equipment operator and after the river project was completed, he was then employed by Industrial Contractors where he worked on numerous projects until his retirement. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers and the American Legion.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trap and skeet shooting, automobiles/trucks, beautiful lawns and riding lawn mowers, dogs and cats, reading the weekly Vevay Reveille Enterprise newspaper from front to back, telling stories that have entertained countless work buddies, friends, and family members for years, watching the grandkids'/great-grandkids' sporting events, old Westerns and NBA/WNBA pro games on TV, and family get-togethers.
On October 2023, he was selected to be a passenger on the Veteran's Honor Flight of Southern Indiana to Washington DC. The day long trip included visiting most of the monuments, military memorials, Arlington Cemetery and observing the changing of the guards at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He was overwhelmed with the respect and support given to all veterans and enjoyed the camaraderie.
Dick is survived by his wife, Clara; two daughters, Andrea and husband, John Baker of Chandler, IN and Anita and husband, Russell Hagan of Boonville, IN; his grandchildren,
Jordan Baker and wife, Rachel of Elberfeld, IN and Natalie Schumacher and husband, Nate of Chandler, IN; great-grandchildren, Adalyn, Jackson, Nolan Baker and Saylor, Sunnie and Chaunci Schumacher.
He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Bruce Henry, and his parents, Zeke and Dottie Henry.
A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, November 8, 2024 at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, 5333 State Road 261, with entombment in Oak Hill Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Thursday, November 7, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and on Friday from 12:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
