Mr. Smith and his wife, Helen (McQueen), married in 1968 after a serendipitous phone call 1 year earlier.
Patrick (“Mickey”) Smith, one of four children to Mary Smith (Murphy) and James Smith was born on June 4, 1942. He grew up on East 28th Street. He was an older brother to Alfred, Mary Ann and Owen. He would speak fondly about his childhood memories with his siblings and that Owen would make him laugh.
He began working as the lead doorman at 239 East 79th Street, a luxury cooperative residence, in 1968, a position he held for the next 52 years.
Patrick enjoyed traveling with his wife to her home country of Scotland, where he would enjoy the scenery while spending time with his family on the Isle of Arran, a truly beautiful island affectionately known as Scotland in miniature.
Patrick’s home away from home in the U.S. was North Miami Beach, a beautiful place on the Atlantic Ocean where Patrick vacationed with his wife and family across 7 different decades. While in Miami, Patrick loved to visit Gulfstream Park, where he would play horses and tell stories.
Patrick had a very special bond with residents of 239 East 79th Street, where he worked from age 26 starting in 1968 through age 78 in 2020, an unprecedented accomplishment. Patrick was dedicated, honest, hardworking, smart and he truly cared for and loved everyone who lived or worked in the building and they loved him right back. He would never hesitate to bet against the New York Giants with one of 239's beloved shareholders.
Patrick and Helen had 4 children and were loving grandparents to 5 grandchildren. His favorite pastime was hanging out with his adult children, Margaret, Maryann, Catriona and Patrick, and he loved them all unconditionally.
Patrick would often say that he was blessed to have five beautiful grandchildren including Caitlyn, William, Sydney, Aiden and Kelly. He would babysit his grandchildren, make them laugh, play with them, watch movies and he would take them toy shopping any chance he could get.
Patrick also had tremendous love for the spouses of his children including Kevin, Melissa, Michael and Thomas.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial donations to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, a cause that was very important to Patrick as his daughter Catriona is a recent breast cancer survivor.
Thank you.
